■Indians and British irregulars attacked Fort Henry, site of present-day Wheeling, on 1782. This
last battle of the American Revolution was fought after peace was arranged, but the news did not
reach the frontier. In the past, Wheeling was one of the nation's greatest steel-making cities and a
center of pottery, glass, textile, plastic, and paper production. Note the 1849 Wheeling Suspension
Bridge, the longest at the time; Independence Hall (1859), birthplace of West Virginia; the
restored Centre Market and many Victorian homes; and Wheeling Downs Greyhound Racetrack.
People flock from all over the east to 1,500-acre Oglebay Resort, 15 minutes from downtown, to
admire its gardens, swim, and play golf. The Nature Center offers walks, astronomy, nature classes,
and a small children's zoo. Also of interest are the Mansion Museum, Carriage House Glass
Center, Greenhouse and Garden, and amphitheater. In winter ice-skate, sled, and ski.
